OHSA requirements : First Aid Kits in workplace


The OHSA (Occupational Health Safety Act) of South Africa requires companies with more than 5 employees to have a First Aid Kit on the premises.

These First Aid Kits need to comply with the minimum standards as prescribed by the act.

With having five or less employees you may have a standard shop and office First Aid kit. When a company has five to twenty employees you will require a Government regulation three (3) First Aid Kit. Any company that has more than twenty employees you will require a government regulation seven (7)  First Aid kit.    

Basic content for a shop/office First Aid kit should have the following:

  1. Antiseptic solution
  2. Gauze swabs
  3. Forceps (plastic)
  4. Scissors
  5. Safety pins
  6. Triangular bandage
  7. Range of bandages
  8. Plasters
  9. Gloves
  10. Splints
  11. C.P.R mouthpiece
  12. Burn dressings or spray
